Konghou - Introduction

The Konghou is an ancient Chinese harp. It is also known as Kanhou. Though being extinct sometime in the Ming Dynasty it was revived in around the 20th century. However the modern instrument does not resemble the ancient one. The modern konghou's strings are folded over to make two rows, which enable players to use advanced playing techniques such as vibrato and bending tones. The two rows of strings also make it suitable for playing fast rhythms and overtones. This would be the difference between the modern instrument and the ancient one. There are mainly three kinds of Konghou: one is played lying flat, one is played upright and another one is the phoenix-headed Konghou.
